Y Selar

Selar 2 compilation artwork

I was commissioned to design the artwork for Selar 2, a vinyl-only compilation album released by Y Selar. The album was an exclusive release for members of the Clwb Selar Society, a supporters’ club dedicated to contemporary Welsh music.

The design concept was inspired by the album’s eclectic tracklist. The way the songs moved unpredictably between genres and tempos reminded me of the erratic yet graceful movements of a butterfly. This became the central concept for the artwork.

To bring the idea to life, I created a series of symmetrical inkblots on paper, experimenting until I had a collection of shapes that could be assembled into a butterfly form. These were then digitised, coloured, and composed into the final visual. To complement the organic feel of the artwork, I developed a loose, hand-drawn typeface that tied the overall aesthetic together.
